The department of English is established in 1989, along with the establishment of the college. The department was run up to 1994 by a single hand, Mr B. P. Jadhav. Later, in the years 1994 and 1996 two other hands joined. Mr B. P. Jadhav headed the department up to 2014. Mr S. N. Pandit leaded the department since 2014 to 2021. Mr. P.V. Takey is working as the head of the department since 2021.
The department runs both optional and compulsory papers. The college and also the department are located in rural area. Yet, the department encourages students to opt for English so that they have better job opportunities. The department also tries to inculcate graduate attributes in them to enhance their employability. A number of our alumni now assume positions of importance in various areas and are serving society and nation. One of our alumni Dr. B. N. Gaikwad who hailed from very humble social and economic background pursued studies here and because of the motivation given by the department completed masters in English, cleared NET, acquired Ph.D. post-doctoral degree from a prestigious university in the United States. He now serves as Principal of Uran College, Uran Dist. Raigad.
The English language has become the lingua-franca of the world. In a multilingual and diverse country like India and in many parts of the world it is enjoying the status of a language of connectivity or a language of communication. It is generally hailed as the language of knowledge, language of science and technology, language of research, language of trade and commerce, and what not. It has consolidated its status of World Language in the era of globalization, in the era of information technology. In nutshell, a considerable mastery in English communication is necessary with your domain knowledge/skills to excel in your career.
The subject English means English as a foreign language (Second or Third Language). When we say that we learn English it means that we are learning the English language; literature provides context to acquire the language skills i.e. Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. We offer English subject at UG Level. In B.A. Programme it can be taken as optional subject. In B.A./B.Com./B.Sc. programmes it is offered to all the first and second year students as a compulsory subject. The optional English courses comprise thorough exposure to different literary genres like prose, poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, criticism and critical theory, phonetics as well as grammar. In the compulsory courses the study of the subject focuses mostly on communication skills developing exercise with syllabi comprising units on communication skills, grammar, and short texts in fiction and non-fiction.
